Linux?what is it?
What is Linux
Linux is a kernel at the same time (or core) and the operating system that runs over it, depending on the context in which you find the reference. The Linux kernel was created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds, then a Finnish student, and today is maintained by a worldwide community of developers (which includes individual programmers and companies such as IBM, HP and Hitachi), coordinated by the same Linus, now a Developer recognized worldwide.
Linux uses the GPL, a free license - which means, among other things, that all
stakeholders can use it and redistribute it. Allied with several other free software,
such as KDE, GNOME, Apache, Firefox, the software of the GNU system and OpenOffice.org,
Linux can form a modern, secure and stable environment for desktops, servers
and embedded systems.
Linux or Linux?
The Free Software Foundation argues that formed the core operating system Linux and range of tools and applications that include those developed by its project should be called GNU Linux, rather than just Linux. The issue has been the subject of intense debate for years, without which a general and permanent position is achieved.
